Unlocking Excellence: The TurnKey Story with Founder John Woodruffe

At the heart of TurnKey is a belief that business transformation happens when operational excellence meets human connection. In a new podcast episode, TurnKey founder John Woodruffe sits down with long-time friend and Team Academy founder, Rachel Haslam to reflect on the journey that shaped both his personal journey and the company’s mission. It’s a conversation that’s as emotional as it is insightful. John opens up about the life experiences that have made him the leader he is today.

John’s career began on the factory floor in 1980. A pivotal conversation with a mentor an uncle in his seventies, challenged him. “What now?” What did John want from life, was he ok working on the shop floor for the next 50 years? John appreciated that moment, and it opened a pathway to further education, an Unpaid, outside-of-work commitment that spanned several years.

That decision changed the course of his life, moving him from the shop floor to the boardroom. It also instilled in him a deep respect for mentorship, which he now champions as a cornerstone of leadership development.

TurnKey was born from this ethos. The company helps organisations achieve world-class performance by identifying gaps and bringing in the right expertise, not just in manufacturing, but across all business functions. Drawing on frameworks like EFQM, the Shingo Prize, and the Baldrige Model, TurnKey delivers balanced, holistic transformation.

At the core of TurnKey’s methodology is Lean Six Sigma, a structured approach to eliminating waste and improving processes. But John is quick to point out that systems alone aren’t enough. “You can’t fix processes without people,” he says. “And you can’t build culture without structure.” That’s why TurnKey integrates operational tools with human-centric strategies such as communication, culture, and team engagement, to create lasting change.

John’s own transformation mirrors the journey he now facilitates for others. Once known for being blunt and headstrong, he has evolved into a leader who values humility, debate, and diverse perspectives. His passion for British manufacturing, his role as a single parent, and his commitment to mental health and male friendship circles all reflect a leader who brings both heart and head to his work.

One of the most moving parts of the podcast is John’s reflection on his friendship with the late Dawn Gibbons a businesswoman, philanthropist, and the person who introduced him to Rachel. John supported Dawn through a major business turnaround, helping her rebuild from financial loss to long-term success. She later went on to become the most generous participant in the TV series Secret Millionaire.

After her passing, John was asked to write her eulogy a moment that left a lasting impact. Years later, he reconnected with Dawn’s daughter, April Wild, after seeing her receive an award. TurnKey’s impact is tangible. From mapping out dozens of improvement
opportunities in just a few days, to helping businesses recover through honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations, the results speak for themselves. But for John, the real success lies in empowering people, on the shop floor and in the boardroom, to see their own “golden thread” and take ownership of their role in the bigger picture.
